How hard is it for us as a society to try something new? I believe the older we get the less likely we will try or do new things. We become pretty set in our ways. I got to experience something new this past weekend. We became a new family into another sport. Our youngest has decided during their senior year to try another sport during the fall season. They will be doing their original sport as well as trying another for the first time ever.
This past weekend we got to experience some tournament play with the new sport. We had absolutely no idea what we were getting ourselves into. We showed up and sat there completely confused. Thankfully we know lots of the kids and parents who could help us understand. We asked many questions and learned loads. Next tournament we won’t be so in the dark. Hopefully! Fingers crossed.
I gotta say the best part of this new adventure was watching the pure joy coming from our child’s face. Smiling the entire day. They couldn’t stop going from person to person talking to them and encouraging them. You could see how different this sport group is to the other fall sport they play. Our child slid right into the team with no problem. Teammates yelling their name every chance they could. Our child felt so supported by the team.
While we were at the tournament our child made a huge play for the team and was racing around the field with pure excitement. Teammates rushed to share in the excitement. While I was capturing the image through my camera I got teary eyed watching this. I saw where they are now, to where they were last year, and wow! They have come full circle with what they want from life.
When we got home, our child wanted to keep talking about their experience. I stayed in their room and we talked about the day. They kept talking about all their new teammates and the upcoming season. They were also worried about their pictures, hoping they came out with most attention to the one very specific moment. Their favorite play of the day. I just smiled from ear to ear, told them even of the picture didn’t come out you still have them memory you will never forget.
Before we went to sleep I grabbed some ice packs for some sore places on their body. They gave me hug, thankful I go to all their events. In this moment, I was glad they had the courage to try something new. I want to remember even at my age to try some new things once in awhile. Push myself outside of my comfort zone. Thanks kiddo for teaching me something new this weekend.
